Chickpeas Remain Steady

PANAMA - Jun 1/18 - SNS -- Chickpea markets finished the week mostly unchanged in continued light trade, though markets are relieved to see seeding wrapping up in both Canada and the United States.

As of May 28, farmers in Saskatchewan had sown 96% of their intended acreage, up slightly from 94% complete at the same time last year and well ahead of the previous five year average of 68% complete by the end of May.

Heat and dryness during seeding had an impact on field conditions, with half of Saskatchewan's crop rated in good condition, while 48% of fields were rated fair and 2% poor. At this time last year, 63% were rated good, 34% poor and 3% fair. Ratings may improve by the time of the next report, with many growers reporting they received beneficial rains at the end of the week.
