U.S. Dry Bean Seeding Starts

WASHINGTON - May 15/18 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's dry edible bean crops is starting to get underway in parts of the United States, judging from state level crop progress reports issued by the USDA.

Data available from states reporting progress suggest 19% of the crop is now in the ground, compared to 16% last year and the recent five year average of 22%.

Crop reports in North Dakota, the largest producing state, report topsoil moisture is 12% very short, 35% short, 50% adequate, and 3% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 15% very short, 36% short, 47% adequate, and 2% surplus.

In Colorado, hot and dry conditions accelerated fieldwork and planting activities during the past week. Precipitation late last week was mostly confined to northern and some eastern counties.
