Busy Growers Firm Birdseeds

PANAMA - May 11/18 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets finished the week's trading on a generally firmer note, helped by outside markets and strength in the value of the Canadian dollar.

A firm undertone was evident in white proso millet and canaryseed, with growers showing limited interest in selling because they are busy with spring seeding.

Roughly 5% of the canaryseed crop was in the ground as of May 7, compared to 11% last year the recent average of 13% planted by the end of the first week of May. Sunflower seeding will not start in earnest for a couple of weeks in the key producing areas in the United States.
