Canaryseed Intentions Ignored by Market

PANAMA - Apr 28/18 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets ignored the Statistics Canada seeding intentions report for canaryseed, reflecting the belief sampling errors continue to understate area and production.

If farmers only plant the 231,000 acres suggested by the report, it would be smallest seeded area since 1987. Average yields would result in 115,000 metric ton (MT) harvest, making it the smallest output since 2001, when drought slashed average yields.

Some weight is added to the idea area by a reported shift from oilseeds and specialty crops into cereal grains. Statistics Canada says farmers in Saskatchewan intend to plant 17.2% more spring wheat this year, lifting area in the province to 8.1 million acres. Intended plantings of all classes of wheat in the province are up 15.8% at 13.1 million acres.
