Duty Hike Unsettles Kabulis

PANAMA - Mar 23/18 - SNS -- Small caliber kabuli chickpea markets finished the week's trading on an uncertain note following India's decision to raise import duties from 40% to 60%.

The change is not expected to hurt imports of large kabuli chickpeas from Mexico because those are destined for high end consumers and planting seed markets.

However, small caliber kabulis often competed with desi chickpeas and yellow peas for demand from more price sensitive millers and consumers.
