India's Politics Pervades Chickpeas

PANAMA - Feb 23/18 - SNS -- Chickpea markets finished the week little changed in relatively light trading activity.

Desi chickpea growers and exporters from Australia are hopeful they will see positive changes because of the strong official reaction India has encountered over last year's change in import duties for pulses and its insistence that cargoes be fumigated with methyl bromide.

The issues continue to be discussed by World Trade Organization and during Ministerial level meetings with Australia and Canada. Termed a concession, India has indicated a willingness to give pre-advice of future changes in import duty levels instead of making them effective the day they are announced.
