India Adds Ice To Pulse Markets

PANAMA - Feb 6/18 - SNS -- The Indian government surprised chickpea markets by boosting the import duty from 30% to 40% effective immediately.

At the same time, the Indian government said it will double the import duty on sugar to 100%. The two actions follow recent changes in other levies importers need to pay.

In its latest budget, India replaced a 3% education levy on import duties with a 10% social surcharge. With the change, the combined cost to importers of the import duty and surcharge rises from 51.5% to 55% on peas, from 30.9% to 33% on lentils, and now to 44% on chickpeas.
