Green Lentils Unmoved by USDA Numbers
PANAMA - Jan 15/18 - SNS -- Green lentil markets were not hurt by the USDA's final production estimate for 2017 and the December 1 stocks in all positions report.
Available supplies of domestic lentils were pegged at 190,329 metric tons (MT) on December 1, down from 238,592 the previous year. At the same time, production was fixed at 339,381 MT from 1.1 million acres, down from 575,388 MT from 933,000 acres in 2016.
The production estimate is somewhat controversial. Some market participants expected the USDA to boost average yields based on their personal observations during harvest in drought affected states.
