Dry Bean Crop Jumps 25%

WASHINGTON - Jan 12/18 - SNS -- The USDA pegged dry edible bean production for the states it looks at as 35.8 million cwt (100 pound units) or 1.626 million metric tons (MT), up 25% from the previous year.

Planted area for the 11 states in the report totalled 2.09 million acres, up 26% from 2016 and the highest since 1990. Harvested area was estimated at 2.01 million acres, 29% above the previous year.

The average United States yield was 1,781 pounds per acre, a decrease of 61 pounds from 2016.

Adding back in estimated seeded area and production for the states removed from the report last year, it appears total dry edible bean production reached 1.7 million MT from 2.17 million acres, compared to 1.36 million MT from 1.73 million acres last year.

In North Dakota, planting was virtually complete by mid-June and harvest neared completion by October 22. In Michigan, good spring rains gave way to hot, dry summer conditions. However, the crop exceeded many growers' expectations. In Idaho and Montana, abnormally dry conditions reduced crop yields.
