2017 Ends With Slow Pea Exports

PANAMA - Dec 29/17 - SNS -- Bulk field pea movement from Canada gives important insight into the health of exports from that country.

On average, 77% of all peas shipped from Canada move through the bulk handling system. That peaked at 87% and 88% respectively during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 marketing campaigns. So far in 2017-18, movement through the bulk handling system has dropped to 71% of all exports, with the industry expecting that number to drop further as the season advances.

So far this season, bulk loadings are down almost 780,000 metric tons (MT), with clearances in November setting a record low for that month since the year 2000. Interestingly, loadings for the calendar year are only down 317,000 at 2.67 million.
