Lentils Assess Duty Impact

PANAMA - Dec 29/17 - SNS -- Lentil markets are finishing the 2017 calendar year on a quiet note, with markets uncertain about the full impact import duties will have on underlying demand throughout 2018.

The duty exemption on lentils was removed effective December 21. The change took affect the day it was announced, with the result some exporters were caught with container loads of lentils enroute to the country.

As was the case with peas and chickpeas, trading activity in the commodity suggests some importers were "loading up" on product in anticipation of the duties.
