Rabi Seeding Progress Unnerves Peas

PANAMA - Nov 3/17 - SNS -- International field pea markets were unnerved to see farmers in India have started the 2017-18 rabi season by planting pulses at a near record pace.

Land in all pulses totalled 4.2 million hectares as of November 3, just behind the record of 4.5 million hectares sown by the same time in 2011. By this time last year, 2.86 million hectares had been planted.

On average, India plants 10% of all pulses that will grown during the rabi season by the end of October and a further 54% in November. This makes the next few weeks critical to knowing whether the increase in minimum support prices and discussion about further limiting imports has encouraged farmers to boost area.
