Edible Beans in Dominican Republic

WASHINGTON - Oct 28/17 - SNS - Dry edible beans have historically been one of the most important agricultural products in the southwest region of the Dominican Republic, and an important part of the Dominican diet.

In a recent report, the U.S. agricultural attache for the country noted that the country harvested 33,947 metric tons (MT) in 2016 because of better farming practices and timely rainfall.

Although the Dominican Government has applied formal and informal measures to limit bean imports into the market, bean imports remained strong during the last few years, totaling 38,546 MT during 2016. The United States supplied 92% (35,558 MT) of that total.
