Lentils Maintain Easier Tone

PANAMA - Sep 29/17 - SNS -- Lentil markets maintained their slightly easier undertone, reflecting the virtual completion of the North American harvest.

Cool and damp weather has delayed the harvest of the few remaining fields, raising the risk that the last part of the harvest will be lower quality.

The Canadian Grain Commission's (CGC) voluntary sample submission program with farmers suggests that the average protein level of this year's crop is down from last for both red and green lentils.

Based on 148 submissions from farmers, the CGC says the average protein content of this year's green lentil crop is 25.8%, down from 27.2% last year. Interestingly, 23% of the samples submitted graded No 1 Canada, 71% No 2 Canada and 7% Extra 3 Canada. By contrast, crop reporters in Saskatchewan estimated 37% of the crop is No 1 grade, 57% No 2, 5% No 3 and Extra 3, and the remaining 1% sample grade.

Of the 154 samples of red lentils submitted to the CGC, 98% graded No 1 Canada and 2% No 2 Canada. The average protein content of the red lentil samples was 25.4%, down from 27% last year.
