Kharif Seeding Wrapping Up

DELHI - Sep 29/17 - SNS -- India's farmers have almost completed seeding this year's kharif or monsoon season pulse crops, with total area closer to last year than initially expected.

As of September 29, 14.201 million hectares had been planted, down from 14.747 million at this time last year but well above the recent five-year average of 11.425 million hectares. This is the second largest area in kharif season pulses in the country's history.

However, India's agriculture department thinks yields will be below last year's average, with the result output could drop 7.7% to 8.71 million metric tons (MT). That production is expected to decline more than seeded area reflects issues with yields in some states and a change in the mix of pulses planted.
