Chickpea Yield Estimates Vary

PANAMA - Sep 1/17 - SNS -- Canadian chickpea yield and production estimates occupy a wide range, with provincial crop reporters and Statistics Canada sharing a fundamental disagreement over potential output.

In its first official production estimate, Statistics Canada said farmers thought yields would average 1,225 pounds per seeded acre in Saskatchewan, while crop reporters in Saskatchewan think they will be closer to 813 pounds.

Part of the difference could reflect the timing of the surveys. Statistics Canada surveyed farmers the last half of July, before any harvest activity. The provincial numbers were developed as the harvest got underway, with 7% of the crop in the bin by the time of the survey, compared to an average of 9.8% by the end of August and 1% last year.
