Caution in Pea Markets

PANAMA - Aug 19/17 - SNS -- International field pea markets ended the week on a cautious note as India revised its 2016-17 production estimates and it became clear per capita availability of pulses in the country has reached a recent record high.

With pulse production across the 2016-17 production cycle now pegged at 22.95 million metric tons (MT), available supplies during the 2016 calendar year ended up around 19.7 kilograms per capita. That is expected to rise to 20.5 kilograms this year. The increase reflects a bumper rabi season harvest and little change in overall pulse seedings during the current monsoon or kharif growing season.

By the middle of August, farmers had planted 13.068 million hectares, down from 13.542 million at this time last year but well above the recent five-year average of 10.331 million hectares.
