U.S. Dry Bean Output Jumping 19%

WASHINGTON - Aug 10/17 - SNS -- Dry edible bean production in 11 key areas in the United States is expected to increase 19% to 34.2 million cwt (100 pound units) or 1.55 million MT, according to the first USDA production estimate of the season.

It is important to note that seven states were removed from the estimates in 2016. Including those states suggests the harvest will rise from 1.36 to 1.62 million MT.

Planted area is estimated at 2.09 million acres, up 26% from 2016. Harvested area is forecast at 2.01 million acres, 29% above the previous year. The average United States yield is forecast at 1,704 pounds per acre, a decrease of 138 pounds from last season.

In North Dakota, as of July 30, the crop condition was rated mostly fair to good. During July, temperatures were about normal in the major growing areas. Precipitation during July was below normal with some areas in the eastern half of the State 1 to 3 inches below normal.

In Montana, drought-like conditions were reported throughout most of the growing season. Some areas have received little or no rain since the crop was planted. Dry bean condition was rated mostly poor to fair, with 27% of the crop harvested by June 30.

In Michigan, planting began behind schedule in the beginning of June, but emergence was ahead of schedule by the end of the month. Localized heavy rains early in the season left many dry bean fields in standing water, leading some to be replanted. Cooler than average temperatures in the beginning of July, along with continued wet weather, slowed growth for the beans and led to declining condition. By July 30, dry bean condition was rated 45% in good to excellent condition.
