Modest Uptick in U.S. Bean Condition
WASHINGTON - Aug 8/17 - SNS -- The conditions of dry edible bean in the United States improved slightly over the past week, though the proportion of crop rated in fair to very poor condition was unchanged at 42%.
Crop reporters in North Dakota note that "most of the state received some much needed rain, especially the western half. . . . . This recent moisture benefitted development of late-season row crops. More precipitation was needed during the remainder of the row crop growing season to ensure good crop development."
Of the state's dry edible bean crops, 95% are now blooming, near 96% last year and 91% average. Setting pods was 61%, behind 79% last year and 69% average.
In Minnesota, nearly all of the dry edible bean crop had reached the blooming stage, with 72% setting pods. Significantly, rains quenched the dry areas through the middle of the state, but some southern and northern counties were left hoping for more.
Michigan's bean growers experienced a week of warm nights and hot, humid days which is accelerating crop development. Even so, development still lagged behind the previous year and 5-year average pace.
