Peas Start Week on Nervous Note

PANAMA - Aug 7/17 - SNS -- International field pea markets are starting the week on a nervous note against news India has imposed import quotas on pigeon pea or tur.

The 200,000 metric tons (MT) import quota expires on March 31, 2018. But, is clearly signals the willingness of the Indian government to limit imports in an effort to support prices paid to the country's farmers.

Pigeon pea markets have been under significant pressure since the start of the year because of last summer's record kharif season crop. This has affected interest in growing the crop this year, with plantings so far totalling 3.751 million hectares, compared to 4.519 million by the first week of August last year.
