Chickpea Tone Stays Firm

PANAMA - Jul 2/17 - SNS -- Land in chickpeas in both Canada and the United States jumped from 503,000 to 615,000 acres this year, according to seeded area estimates from Statistics Canada and the USDA.

Even so, the increase was significantly less than expected by some processors in the United States and world markets. Some market participants expected area in the two countries to nearly double, but growers are showing a preference for crops which are less risky from a quality and movement perspective.

Seeded area in the United States jumped 42% over last year to 462,000 acres, up 42% from last season, including 161,000 acres of small caliber kabuli type chickpeas and 301,000 acres of large.
