WASHINGTON - Jun 30/17 - SNS -- Corn planted area for all purposes in 2017 is estimated at 90.9 million acres, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates for 2017.
Seeded area is down 3% from last year, but above pre-report estimates. The average forecast was 89.903 million, down slightly from the March seeding intentions of 89.996 million and down sharply from 94.0 million a year ago
Farmers responding to the survey indicated that 98% of the intended corn acreage had been planted at the time of the interview, slightly higher than the 10-year average. Planted acreage for 2017 is unchanged or down compared with the previous year across most of the eastern Corn Belt. Record low planted acreage is estimated in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Rhode Island, while record high planted acreage is estimated in Nevada and Oregon.
An estimated 92% of this year's corn crop was planted with biotechnology seed varieties, unchanged from last year. Biotechnology seed includes traits for insect resistance (Bt), herbicide resistance, or stacked gene which contains traits for both herbicide and insect resistance.
