Pulses Barely Move From Intentions

PANAMA - Jun 29/17 - SNS -- Pulse markets were surprised by the how little has changed since Canada released its seeding intentions report in April.

Land in pulses and other specialty crops is just 1% higher than farmers said they intended to plant this year. By contrast, farmers planted 5% more soybeans than intended at 7.282 million acres and planted 2% more canola than originally planned at 22.84 million.

Markets are paying close attention to the expansion of soybeans in Saskatchewan because there is no doubt that some of the growth comes at the expense of lentils and other dry edible pulses. Statistics Canada says farmers in that province boosted soybean plantings from 240,000 to 850,000 acres, while area in Manitoba reached 2.29 million acres, up from 1.635 million last year.
