Green Lentils Focus on India

PANAMA - May 28/17 - SNS -- Green lentil markets are paying some attention to initial seeding progress for India's kharif or monsoon season crop.

Area sown so far is up from last year, rising from 71,000 to 112,000 hectares so far. Land in arhar or tur or pigeon pea has doubled to 6,000 hectares; while urdbean has advanced from 28,000 to 33,000; moongbean from 15,000 to 24,000, and other pulses from 25,000 to 49,000 hectares.

Some millers import green lentils as a substitute for pigeon pea, buying largely on a price basis. As a result, markets are paying attention to that number even though it is too early to assume current progress is an indication of how much will be sown in all regions.
