Kharif Seeding Starts Strong

PANAMA - May 21/17 - SNS -- International field pea and green lentil markets were surprised by the initial pace of seeding of this year's kharif or monsoon season crops in India.

Despite reports on widespread grower dissatisfaction with the fact prices have dropped below Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for the major pulses, farmers have planted more than this time last year or the recent average.

Initial seeding progress is limited to Tamil Nadu, with 56,000 hectares sown so far; Nagaland at 82,000; Assam at 55,000; Kerala at 1,000; and Odisha at 100 hectares.
