Chickpea Market Tone Remains Firm

PANAMA - May 6/17 - SNS -- International chickpea markets maintained their firm tone through the past week in both spot and new crop shipping positions.

Tight supplies in most major producing countries is helping support spot markets, while new crop shipping positions are helped by the fact stocks of large caliber product will be tight until Mexico's 2018 harvest.

The delayed start to seeding in Saskatchewan is a minor concern in markets. Typically, 5% of the crop is in the ground by the first week of May. This year, there are no reports of seeding progress. However, Canada is not a price leader and the delay is not considered worrisome from the perspective of world markets.
