Canadians Buck Chickpea Area Trend
PANAMA - Apr 23/17 - SNS -- Chickpea growers in Canada appear poised to buck international trends and reduce rather than increase land in the crop.
Statistics Canada says farmers in Saskatchewan intend to reduce seeded area from 160,000 to 140,000 acres, while unofficial estimates see Alberta growers increasing land in the crop from 12,000 to 13,000 acres. Seeded area is not broken down by class, but land in desi chickpeas is limited.
If farmers stick with their seeding intentions, average yields see production climb from 85,200 to 114,000 metric tons (MT). For the second year in a row, the country's residual supply is only expected to be 2,000 MT, with the result its available supply should climb from just over 96,000 MT to 125,000.
