Green Lentil Area Rising

PANAMA - Apr 2/17 - SNS -- Acreage trends in the United States and Canada appear to be following very different paths, with farmers in the United States planning to increase area while Canadian growers are expected to reduce plantings.

In its seeding intentions report, the USDA said land in the crop could jump 13% to 1.06 million acres. Prospective plantings are up in Montana and Washington, but down in Idaho and North Dakota. Virtually all the U.S. crop is green lentils.

If what is happening in the United States is mirrored in Canada, seeded area should still decline. However, all of the drop would be borne by red lentils, with green possibly rising.
