North America Mustard Area Decline

PANAMA - Apr 1/17 - SNS -- The USDA seeding intentions released during the week did not include acreage forecasts for mustard seed.

However there is a general expectation area in the United States will decline, reflecting Canadian dominance of the North American domestic market and weaker than average price performance relative to other crops.

The only minor oilseeds included in the seeding intentions report were canola, which is expected to increase 12% to a record 1.93 million acres.

The USDA says planted area is expected to increase in all major States, with Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, and Oregon all increasing by more than 70% from last year. Planted area in North Dakota, the leading canola-producing State, is estimated at 1.50 million acres, up 3% from last year.

In the case of flaxseed, farmers intend to reduce seeded area 16% to 313,000 acres. Acreage in North Dakota, the largest flaxseed-producing State, is down 15% at 50,000 acres.
