USDA Expects Higher Seeded Area

WASHINGTON - Mar 31/17 - SNS -- The USDA says farmers in the eleven states it covers will increase dry edible bean seeded area 12% this year to 1.866 million acres.

If farmers in the remaining seven main producing states follow that trend, total land in beans in the United States will come in around 1.941 million acres, in line with earlier forecasts.

Dry edible bean seeded area includes chickpeas, which are up substantially over last year. Farmers in states included in the report say they will boost land in the crop from 325,300 to 498,000 acres. As a result, the USDA says land in other classes of beans was little changed, inching up from 1.337 to 1.368 million acres.

Judging from the changes within states and the classes normally grown there, it seems likely that pinto bean area is down this year, dropping from 647,900 to 616,500 acres. Black bean seedings could be up slightly, advancing from 233,600 to 238,300 acres, while white pea area could climb from 194.400 to 200,500 acres,
