Record Indian Pulse Crop

PANAMA - Feb 18/17 - SNS -- Pulse production in India, from both last summer's kharif this winter's rabi season crops, is expected to jump by a third to set a new record high.

In its second production forecast for the 2016-17 season, India's agriculture department pegged total output at 22.14 million metric tons (MT), compared to STAT's 22.35 million MT forecast in the December edition of its Export Essentials book series.

Production of all food grains was pegged at a record 271.98 million MT, reflecting the impact of "good rainfall" during the 2016 monsoon. Rice production is expected to total 108.86 million MT; wheat 96.64 million; coarse cereals 44.34 million MT; and oilseeds 33.60 million MT.

Breaking down pulse output by major categories, India's agriculture department said gram or chickpea output will likely jump from 7.17 to 9.12 million MT; while urad output should climb from 2.2 to 2.89 million; and tur or pigeon pea jumped from 2.46 to 4.23 million MT.
