Peas Adopt Reflective Posture

PANAMA - Jan 13/17 - SNS -- International field pea markets maintained their quiet tone during the past week, with exporters focussed on meeting outstanding shipping commitments and key buyers on the Indian subcontinent assessing their production poetntail from this winter's rabi crop.

Weekly rabi seeding progress by India's farmers remained just above the recent five year average for the second week of January, lifting total area to 15.535 million hectares, compared to 13.99 million at this time last year and the recent average of 14.4 million.

Growers remain on pace to match or exceed the record 16.19 million hectares sown during the 2013-14 rabi season. Land in chickpeas is up over 15% from last year at roughly 10 million hectares, while lentil area is up 18% at around 1.7 million. Land in all pulses is up 11% over last year, while area in other pulses is little changed at around 4.3 million hectares.
