Pea Markets Unsettled

PANAMA - May 20/22 - SNS -- Field pea markets finished the week's trading on an easier note against slowing short term demand as buyers start to switch their focus to new crop in expectation of lower average prices.

However, markets in the United States remain firm because of deep concerns over the yield potential of crops in Montana.

Farmers in that state intended to seed 600,000 acres of peas this year, up from 570,000 last year. This is 55% of the intended area for the United States. Without timely rains during the growing season, Montana's yields are at risk.
