U.S. Pea Seeding Half Complete

WASHINGTON - May 17/22 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's field pea crop has passed the halfway point, with progress most advanced in Montana and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

Field conditions are not ideal in many parts of the growing area, with the result many growers need rain to help with germination and timely rains to ensure proper crop development.

Montana, one of the largest field pea producing regions in the United States, reports that topsoil moisture is very short in 26% of the land, down from 35% last week. Roughly 47% of the land is short and 27% adequate, compared to 42% and 23% respectively last week. Significantly, subsoil moisture is reported as 48% very short and 31% short with the 21% balance adequate.
