Birdseeds Maintain Firm Footing
PANAMA - May 1/21 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets continued to strengthen over the past week, with values for Canadian canaryseed and oil type sunflower advancing while white proso millet held steady.
Markets were caught off guard by the Statistics Canada seeding intentions estimate for Canada. Instead of seeing an increase in intended area, farmers indicate they will reduce it from 273,000 to 243,600 acres.
The result is controversial. Some market participants believe there will be upward revisions as more data becomes available and planting of this year's crop is complete. Later in the year, data will be available from provincial crop insurance agencies, which will help confirm the direction for plantings.
