Big Jump in Kharif Harvest Forecast

NEW DELHI - Sep 22/20 - SNS -- India's kharif season pulse harvest is expected to be up 20% over last year at a projected 9.31 million metric tons (MT).

The country's agriculture department explained that the estimates were "based on the data received from states and validated with information available from other sources.

Average yields are expected to benefit from the fact this year's monsoon rainfall levels were 7% above the long term average, with the result "most of the major crops producing states have witnessed normal rainfall."

The biggest percentage changes was in moong (mung) beans, with output expected to climb 27% to 2.09 million MT, while pigeon pea or tur production could rise 5% to 4.04 million, urad 6.5% to 2.15 million, and other types of pulses 27% to 1.03 million MT.

Production of all food grains was forecast at 144.52 million MT. This year's rice harvest could reach 102.36 million, while coarse cereals are estimated at 32.84 million and oilseeds 25.73 million MT.
