No Surprises in Lentil Numbers

PANAMA - Jul 3/20 - SNS -- International lentil markets were not surprised by seeded area reports released during the week by the USDA and Statistics Canada.

Land in all classes of lentils is expected to jump from 3.78 to 4.233 million acres in Canada, while U.S. farmers only increased area 1% to 492,000 acres. The modest change in U.S. plantings reflected reduced interest in planting green lentils this year.

All the increase in Canada was in red lentils, with its share of total area jumping from 62% last year to 69%. Solid demand for red lentils and higher average prices for all classes after February encouraged farmers to abandon their initial intention to modestly reduce plantings.
