Demand Helps Lift Dry Bean Area

PANAMA- Jul 1/20 - SNS -- Land in dry edible beans in the United States rose sharply this year, led by a record plantings in North Dakota.

For states covered by the USDA, area jumped 30% to 1.53 million acres. Including estimates for states no longer included, it is likely total area advanced from 1.339 to 1.651 million acres, the first time since 2006 that area rose above 1.6 million.

Significantly, in March farmers reported they only intended to increase dry bean area 7% to 1.427 million acres. However, panic buying in the initial weeks of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic resulting in unusually strong domestic movement and rising prices at a time when growers could still adjust their plans.
