India Pegs Pulse 2019-20 Harvest at 23.01 MMT

DELHI - May 15/20 - SNS -- India's third advance estimates for its 2019-20 production cycle were higher than expected, with total pulse output pegged at 23.01 million metric tons (MT), compared to 22.08 million last year and the recent five year average of 20.82 million.

In releasing its estimates, India's Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare said it believes crops benefitted from the fact last year's monsoon rains were 10% above average.

Total foodgrain production in the country is estimated at record 295.67 million MT, up 10.46 million from 2018-19 and up 25.89 million from the previous five years average.

The rice crop was pegged at a record 117.94 million MT, while wheat is expected to reach a record 107.18 million MT; nutri/coarse cereals 47.54 million; and oilseeds 33.50 million MT.
