Markets Surprised by Seeding Intentions

PANAMA - May 9/20 - SNS -- Markets were surprised by this year's seeding intentions report for Canadian pulses. Instead of planting more, farmers say they intend to decrease land in all pulses by 4% from 8.9 to 8.57 million acres.

In releasing the data, Statistics Canada admitted, "As a result of the timing of the COVID-19 pandemic, these estimates were produced in March 2020 under exceptional circumstances.

"Active collection of data for the survey was halted earlier than originally planned, in order to minimize burden on farm operators, resulting in a lower than usual response rate compared with previous years."
