Coronavirus Affecting Commodity Movement

PANAMA - Mar 27/20 - SNS -- The other shoe is dropping in the global coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic, with the movement of commodities starting to be affected in parts of the world.

One of the most glaring example was India during the past week. Local officials in several states closed the markets farmers use to sell what they grow. At the same time, others are interfering with the movement of pulses from other regions unless the trucks have permits.

The central government is trying to clarify the rules to allow farmers to buy what they need to plant summer crops. Those account for a small portion of the country's annual agricultural production, but the need to allow farmers to have access to planting seed, chemicals and labor will be more critical once the kharif or monsoon planting season gets underway.
