Exports Support Field Peas

PANAMA - Jan 12/20 - SNS -- North American field pea markets were supported by strong ongoing export demand and despite confirmation that production in the United States was up sharply from last season because of and increase in both seeded area and average yields.

The USDA pegged production of all classes of peas at 1.018 million metric tons (MT) from 1.206 million acres, up from the almost 723,000 MT harvest from 856,5000 acres in 2018.

Exports of whole and split peas from the United States were up 14% from last year at almost 109,000 MT between July and November, while Canadian field pea exports were up 23% between August at November at almost 1.07 million MT. The United States is on pace to record gains in movement of whole yellow and split peas across the 2019-20 marketing campaign, while shipments of green are down slightly.
