Lentils Enter Uneasy Period

PANAMA - Sep 20/19 - SNS -- Lentil markets finished the week's trading on an uneasy note because of discussions in the Indian government about increasing the import duty and/or imposing quantitative limits on imports.

Though prices reflect global supply and demand fundamentals, some government officials in India assert lentils are being dumped. To counter this, they are proposing to hike import duties from 40% to 70%. Some have also proposed imposing quantitative limits on lentil imports, similar to those in place for peas and other pulses.

There do not appear to be fundamental supply problems with lentils in India, though parts of the country undoubtedly face supply issues for pulses in general.
