WASHINGTON - Sep 12/19 - SNS -- U.S. farmers expect to harvest 187 million cwt (100 pound units) of rice this year, down 9% from the previous forecast and down 16% from 2018, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates.
Based on a thorough review of all available data, planted area is now estimated at 2.54 million acres, down 8% from the previous estimate and down 14% from last year. Area for harvest is expected to total 2.48 million acres, down 9% from the previous forecast and down 15% from last year.
Based on conditions as of September 1, the average United States yield is forecast at 7,563 pounds per acre, down 14 pounds per acre from the previous forecast and 129 pounds per acre lower than the 2018 average yield of 7,692 pounds per acre.
