Lentils Generally Quiet

PANAMA - Jul 26/19 - SNS -- Lentil markets experienced another generally quiet week, with many Canadian exporters adopting a somewhat defensive posture in markets and many European traders taking their summer holidays.

Conditions for the Canadian crop remain mixed, with markets disappointed to see crop development slowly slightly between July 18 and 25. The percentage of all pulses rated behind normal development climbed from 25% to 29%, while the thought to be at their normal stage of development dropped from 73% to 69%.

Development of pulse crops in southern and central crop districts is lagging northern crop districts suggesting a higher proportion of lentils are behind normal development than is the case for field peas.

Markets will be looking for the next crop condition report to get a sense of whether this is affecting the yield potential of crops. On the other hand, it suggest the pace of this year's harvest should be slower than last year unless forecasts of relatively hot and dry conditions in August are realized and rush maturity.
