Canada's Area Estimates A Surprise

OTTAWA - Jun 26/19 - SNS -- Markets were surprised by Statistics Canada's seeded area estimates as growers increased land in peas and lentils well beyond their initial seeding intentions.

Land in peas, lentils, dry beans and chickpeas could jump from 8.49 to 8.847 million acres, lead by a significant increase in pea area from 3.615 to 4.333 million acres. Land in lentils was marginally higher at 3.78 million.

Average yields would see production of these pulses advance from 6.351 to 7.103 million metric tons (MT). It is worth noting that the seeded area survey was based on interviews with 24,500 farmers across the country between May 14 and June 11.

On average, the final lentil area has been 2% lower than the June area estimate, but peas were unchanged. The final dry edible bean numbers has ended up 11% higher on average, while chickpeas averaged 20% higher.
