Australia May Expand Pulse Area and Output

PANAMA - Apr 3/19 - SNS -- There is the potential for more pulses to be planted in Australia this year than during the past year, though supply and demand fundamentals make it hard to imagine significant gains.

Land in key pulses could approach 1.82 million hectares, up from just 4.3 million last year, but still below the previous year average of 1.99 million. Australia's first official estimate of seeded area and the impact of growing conditions on prospective yields will be released on June 12.

If yields reach their previous five year average, combined production of peas, lentils, chickpeas, fababeans and lupins would be expected to reach 2.51 million metric tons (MT), up from last year's drought reduced 1.65 million MT harvest but below the recent five year average of 2.82 million.
