MELBOURNE - Mar 21/19 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Weather Situation Tropical Cyclone Trevor is currently located over the northeast Gulf of Carpentaria. The system is likely to continue to reintensify rapidly and is expected to take a more southwestward track across the Gulf, making landfall over the southwest Gulf coast most likely on Saturday. A surface trough extends from northwest Queensland, through the central interior to the far southeast of the state. The trough will start to move slowly westwards today and Friday over southern parts of the state and will combine with moist air to its east to lead to mostly isolated showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will increase above the March average over central and southern parts, while they will remain below average in the north. Forecast for the rest of ThursdayTropical cyclone Trevor is in the Gulf of Carpentaria where is expected to reintensify rapidly and moves slowly west southwestwards. The system will lead to showers, gusty winds, rain areas and storms continuing over the Peninsula and Gulf Coast. An upper trough is likely to amplify a little over the southeast, and provide sufficient instability for showers and thunderstorms over eastern districts. Generally east to southeast winds tending fresh to strong and gusty in the north.Friday 22 MarchTropical cyclone Trevor is forecast to continue to intensify and move slowly over the Gulf of Carpentaria and away from Peninsula west coast. Showers, gusty winds, rain areas and storms may start to ease over the Peninsula and Gulf Coast. The upper trough is likely to weaken or move over the Coral Sea late in the day, however some instability will maintain isolated showers and thunderstorms in the southeast. Generally northeast to southeast winds tending fresh to strong and gusty in the north and northwest.Fire Danger - Low to moderate fire dangers for most of the state.Saturday 23 MarchAn upper ridge over central and eastern parts of the state will cause showers and thunderstorms to become more isolated and eventually confined to the southeast and eastern parts of the state. Tropical cyclone Trevor is forecast to continue to move away from Queensland, possibly making landfall over the southeast Top End in Northern Territory. Showers and storms becoming more isolated over the northern Queensland.Sunday 24 MarchA surface trough over the southern parts of the state will combine with a new upper trough over the central Australia to lead to isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern parts of the state. Showers and thunderstorms continuing over the northern Queensland. Maximum temperatures increasing to several degrees above March average in the south and southeast.Monday 25 MarchThe new upper trough will strengthen and move eastwards combining with a surface trough over the southern and central interior as well as possibly the remnants of tropical cyclone Trevor. This leads to isolated showers and thunderstorms over southwestern and western districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over northern Queensland. Maximum temperatures several degrees above the March average in the south and southeast. Maximum temperatures cooling in the west and southwest as cloud cover and precipitation increases.Tuesday until ThursdayThe new upper trough will continue to move eastwards combining with a surface trough over the southern and central interior as well as possibly the remnants of tropical cyclone Trevor. This leads to isolated showers and thunderstorms possibly extending eastwards into southern central and southeastern districts mid week. Isolated showers and thunderstorms continuing over the northern Queensland. Maximum temperatures remain several degrees above the March average in the south and southeast on Tuesday.
