More Peas Than Expected In U.S.
PANAMA - Feb 11/19 - SNS -- This year's field pea harvest in the United States was substantially higher than initially expected, with the USDA pegging the crop at 722,535 metric tons (MT), compared to its first forecast of a 629,000 MT crop.
The upward change reflects higher than thought seeded area and significantly better yields than feared. Those totalled 1,860 pounds per seeded acre last year, compared to the USDA's first estimate of 1,604 pounds and the previous year's drought reduced 1,258 pound result.
The net result is that instead of seeing residual stocks of peas decline, the U.S. could see little change this season. Even so, there remains a chance for a modest increase in seeded area.
