India Expects Smaller Pulse Harvest

PANAMA - Jan 18/19 - SNS -- Pulse production in India is expected to decline this year, asserts NAFED in unofficial forecasts in advance of the coming production update from the country's agriculture department.

It expects output of chickpeas to drop 6.5% to 10.5 million metric tons (MT), while tur or pigeon pea output is expected to be down 9.33% at 4.08 million.

Interestingly, NAFED believes traders have bought almost 400,000 MT of pigeon peas in Myanmar, expecting the government will lift restrictions on imports because of this season's smaller domestic crop.
